Notes: Naturalization Documentation: There seems to be two separate Naturaliztion forms for Jacob, one from 1858, and the other from 1868. Both give a Pearl street address, implying that they both refer to the same Jacob Caro. In 1868, he claims to have lost his earlier declaration. British Census: Kattie lists her birthplace as London, which implies that Jacob and Mathilde were in England at some point. The 1861 British Census for Newcastle upon Tyne lists a Jacob CARO (age 29), his wife Mathilde (age 23), and two sons: Edmond (2) and Lionel (1). Jacob and Mathilde were both born in Prussia (Jacob is noted as a Naturalized British Subject), and the boys both born in "Newcastle Tyne". The 1851 British Census for the same region lists Jacob (age 19) as the son of Joseph and Henrietta CARO, all from Prussia. Almost certainly, this is the same Jacob as the 1861 entry, but is he OUR Jacob Caro? The 1861 listing does not include Katie (who would have been about 4 years old) or Harris (who should have been 1). Further, the 1870 census lists Harris' birthplace as New York, and Katie's marriage certificate lists her birthplace as London (nearly 250 miles south of Newcastle). Edmond apparently died in 1867, in Newcastle. The 1900 US Census shows that Jacob Immigrated to the US in 1855. City directories list Jacob's business as glass, mirrors, or frames between 1867 and 1897. The address is given as 450 Pearl, changing to 438 Pearl between 1884 and 1886, and then to 196 Canal between 1888 and 1891, and then listed as "196 Canal & 372 2d av" after 1894. Harris joins the business (listed as Harry) in 1884, at the same time a listing for "Caro J & Son" appears. Home addresses start with 464 Hart, in Brooklyn, in 1878, moving to 427 E 123rd St in 1883. Harry apparently moves into his own home at 102 or 120 E. 96th St in 1892. Additional Pictures: (click to enlarge) | |||||||||||||||||||||
